ABSTRACT

In 1937, O. Bayer discovered that a reaction between aliphatic diisocyanate and aliphatic diols (glycols) went smoothly under reflux conditions to build a linear polymer of high molecular weight [1]. Polymers so formed, called polyurethanes, can be drawn into high-tenacity yam (perlon) or used as thermoplastics for injection molding (Durethan). These initial discoveries laid the foundation for present polyurethane chemical technology.
