ABSTRACT
Over 50 species of rodents endemic to Australia are divided into a large older group comprising 13 genera and a small recent group, with late Pleistocene origin, in the genus Rattus. The example used is Rattus lutreolus; 1 the observations are relevant for most Australian rodents, particularly the congeners.
