ABSTRACT

There are three genera of gerbils in east and southern Africa; Tatera with about seven species is the largest. This example concerns the white-bellied bush gerbil, Tatera leucogaster Peters, which has a wide distribution in east and southern Africa, but should be useful for most other species. The census method is suitable for obtaining data on population size, immigration, recruitment, and survivorship. Gerbils are nocturnal and neither estivate nor hibernate and therefore are amenable to census throughout the year.
