ABSTRACT

The white-tailed deer is the most numerous, widespread, large, wild ungulate in North and Central America. Census techniques are of two basic types: those in which the animals are directly observed and counted, covered in this paper, and those in which sign are used to estimate numbers or to evaluate trends in numbers. Two techniques for the species are described: the walking cruise census and the aerial census. Thus, transects in thick cover, as might be found in a scrub-thorn forest, will have a smaller area of visibility and sampling area per transect than transects in open terrain such as a savanna. Walk the transects during the last hour of daylight when deer are most active; they can be walked in the first hour of daylight in the same day if more than one count per day is required.
