ABSTRACT

Vegetation maps of suburban areas should include values for percent of ground covered by structures and roads. This value can often be obtained by plotting transects on city planning maps or aerial surveys, thus avoiding the need to work on private property. In mapping vegetation, it is important to note the percentage of remaining natural vegetation as this value often correlates with the numbers of native birds present. Also, as lawns are often kept mowed, making them poor habitat for seedeaters and reducing the numbers of insects, it is worthwhile to note the percent ground cover kept manicured in this fashion. Informing local residents and the police of people activities is not only a courtesy and a good precaution, but can result in worthwhile information. Homeowners often know what birds are nesting on their property, can give information on exotic yard plants, and also can tell about birds brought in by their pets.
