ABSTRACT

Transmission line corridors have bird populations that differ from the surrounding community. Counting birds in transmission line corridors requires that the observer be able to distinguish in which community the birds are found. Both the fixed plot and the variable plot point count methods are useful for quick surveys of populations along transmission line corridors. The variable strip method has been used to sample birds in complex habitats, using a long transect on a transmission line. The spot map technique indicates the number of species found in the center of a transmission corridor in the edge and at varying distances from the corridor in an adjacent deciduous forest. A variety of techniques can be used in a transmission line corridor.
