ABSTRACT

The genus Alectoris comprises seven partridges of the southern Palearctic. During fall and winter, chukars are in coveys of about 10 to 15 + birds that occupy separate or overlapping ranges. The birds are ground nesters and one brood is reared annually per hen. Large aggregations of birds occur at open water in late summer and at feeding sites. The birds probably do not require open water when succulent vegetation is available. Various census and survey methods have been attempted, including call counts, counts at watering sites, roadside surveys, and recapture methods using observations of marked birds. Stop to scan sites at which birds may not be otherwise readily seen. Duration of trapping and observation periods depends on capture success and population characteristics.
