ABSTRACT

About 200 species of Anolis lizards are known from the southeastern US south to Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, including the West Indies. Some species are also present in Hawaii, where they have been introduced. Most of the species which have been studied are territorial and arboreal. Individuals which show strong defense of territory can often be attracted by tethering another individual of the same species and sex within the territory of the lizard to be captured. This procedure is most useful for attracting a resident down from high regions in a tree or for distracting an individual which might otherwise be too wary to be noosed.
