ABSTRACT

The grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is an important game mammal found throughout the deciduous forest habitats in eastern North America. Two basic census methods have been used for grey squirrels: total counts and indirect estimates. The basic units of temporal analysis are successive 10-day periods. An individual squirrel is considered part of the study population from the date of its initial marking until the last day of the final analysis period during which it is observed on the study area. Trap squirrels alive with traps set at a moderate to low density (i.e., 0.5 to 0.1/ha) throughout the study area.
