ABSTRACT
The hispid cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus) occurs in the Southeast, southern Great Plains, limited portions of the Southwest, and Mexico. The species has received extensive study, partly because it is easily trapped and often abundant. Cotton rats may damage crops during population erruptions, when reported densities have exceeded 400 per hectare.
