ABSTRACT

Microtus ochrogaster are common rodents of the North American grasslands. They range from the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains to western Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee and from central Oklahoma and Arkansas northward into central Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. M. ochrogaster are commonly found in dry habitats with dense grass (although they are commonly found with M. pennsylvanicus in moist habitats), where they construct underground tunnels and nests in addition to above ground runways through grasses and soft soil. They are active day and night, but appear to be less active during periods of temperature extremes.
