ABSTRACT

Synaptomys cooperi, the southern bog lemming, inhabits a large area in Canada from Nova Scotia west to Manitoba and in the U.S. south to North Carolina and west to Kansas. This microtine rodent has been reported to occur in a variety of habitats, including moist grassy areas and areas containing woody vegetation. The species is active throughout the year and may breed in winter. Some populations undergo mul-tiannual fluctuations in population density which are commonly referred to as population cycles.
