ABSTRACT
A commonly employed strategy for estimating numbers or densities of small mammals, especially microtines, is to capture animals in traps set out in a square grid network. Captured animals are either sacrificed or marked and released for potential recapture, and after some number of days of trapping, the capture data are applied to one or another model which yields a population estimate.
