ABSTRACT

Larger scale considerations in forest protection that have been suggested are directly related to investments that should be made in the services that the Canal Watershed provides. Carbon offset investments, sedimentation control programs, and ecotourism are three such areas that people have reviewed. All have the capacity to serve as significant reasons for protecting the Watershed. Currently. Sedimentation problems and water quality issues are, however, much more pressing and are now related to the ability of downstream users to directly comprehend and take action to protect their own Watershed. Panama can learn from the problems that other cities are now facing with issues relating to drinking water alone being an economic factor that can dictate the cost-benefit analysis of preserving the Watershed from development. A mixture of recommendations have been made that address the age-old problems of integration among organizations that were originally mandated to manage different resources that often conflict with each other.
