ABSTRACT

The rapid growth of the Internet parallels advances in the treatment of primary HIV infection. Recent breakthroughs in the use of viral load testing have shifted the focus away from monotherapy to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) with combination regimens. Currently, three classes of drugs are available for the treatment of primary HIV infection and include the nucleoside and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and the protease inhibitors. A review of the historical development of these compounds and some Internet resources is presented. [Article copies available for a fee from The Haworth Document Delivery Service: 1-800-342-9678.
