ABSTRACT

The Internet contains hundreds of sites specific to HIV and AIDS; however, few of them are specific to women, the fastest-growing group of infected individuals worldwide. Since women’s experience of HIV disease differs significantly from men’s and their prevention needs are different as well, a need for female-specific Internet information exists. Most such information currently available is part of large, well-established sites. This article reports a partial survey of such sites, as well as others targeting special populations of women. Development of and access to eventual sites is complicated by the global demographics of female infection. However, electronic sources of information concerning women and HIV are necessary not only for infected individuals but also for prevention and for people who work with either population.
