ABSTRACT
Crab claws assume major importance as tools and weapons used in the essential processes of feeding and reproductive behaviour. As crab claws are amenable to bio-mechanical investigation and crabs themselves make good behavioural subjects, the system has become an important experimental model for studies of optimality in behaviour and morphology. The purpose of this review is to illustrate these principles using appropriate examples, rather than to be comprehensive.
