ABSTRACT
This chapter asks questions about travelling on legs. How fast should an animal go, using which gait? What route should it take? And in what circumstances should it be prepared to take risks? Only mammals will be discussed, because more relevant information is available for them than for other walking and running animals. However, a discussion of the intermittent running strategies of crabs, cockroaches and lizards will be found in Chapter 3.
