ABSTRACT

For freight cars negotiating s-shaped curves problems may occur, especially when loaded and unloaded cars are coupled together. This chapter shows that simulation analysis can be treated effectively with the aid of the multibody program. Three two-axled freight cars are coupled together and subjected to compression forces acting on the outer carbodies as the formation passes through the s-shaped curve with a range of constant velocities from 2 m/s to 10 m/s. To simulate the stick and slip effects in the contact patch of a buffer-pair during curving, a model has been established taking into account these phenomena without producing constraints. For the sake of brevity and for model clarification, the buffer model has been explained only for one dimension. The dynamic simulation of freight cars at low speed and with regard to dry friction effects turned out to be a demanding task for a simulation program.
