ABSTRACT
For a single wheelset moving along a tangent track the equations of motion are derived in the framework of the so-called first-order theory. This theory has an approximate character unless the displacement quantities become very small. In that case we obtain an exact linear theory and one of its features is that the so-called symmetrical movement and the lateral movement become independent of each other.
