ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to introduce several models for train-track-systems and to investigate their dynamical behaviour. The track-subsystems are modelled as infinite Bernoulli-Euler beams or Timoshenko beams on an viscoelastic foundation, while the train subsystem consists of various continuous or lumped models. The mathematical description of the train-track-models depends on the modelling of the subsystems and consists either of two or three coupled partial differential equations for the case of continuous models or a set of ordinary differential equations coupled with a partial differential equation in the case of hybrid model. Particular attention is paid to the stationary solution and its stability. The stability analysis of the hybrid system is performed by investigating the characteristic equation in the frequency-velocity plane. The occurence of instability is caused by the coupling between the radiated and the received wave through the discrete subsystem.
