ABSTRACT

To prevent from postoperative recurrence of exotropia, we undertook Fadenoperation with recession in 21 exotropes. All the patients were basic type intermittent exotropes. The age at surgery ranged 4 to 11 years. The preoperative deviation ranged 35 to 59 prism diopters. The surgical correction was augmented compared with bilateral recession surgery, especially in the large preoperative deviation. Postoperative ocular deviation ranged within 10 prism diopters except for 2 overcorrected cases. Ocular alignment after Faden seemed superior to that after recession surgery. The ocular deviation was stabilized during one-year postoperative course. Adhesion of the muscle at the Faden suture site was considered contributing to the stabilization.
