ABSTRACT

The paper concentrates primarily on the problems and methods of site exploration, field and laboratory testing of swelling and collapsing soils. The paper is based on 40 years of experience with swelling soils in the semi-arid north, and with loess soils in the arid south of Israel. A method of predicting heave based on one dimensional swelling tests is discussed. Heave measurements on 3 different airfield pavements on a swelling soil are analyzed. Prototype load testing of footings and cast insitu piles at a site suspected of collapse potential are presented.
