ABSTRACT

The sheet pile bracing system is the most common practical system for excavation work of basement and foundations in soft Bangkok clay. The sheet pile wall is defined as the flexible wall trends to show a large significant lateral deformation and induces ground settlement whenever the excavation system is carried out without a good quality control. Sheet pile bracing system with fully effective preloading or prestressing strut system was introduced and designed for basement and foundation excavation of 11.3 m. deep. The results shows that the preloading strut system trends to induce the lower wall deflection ratio against basal heave than those proposed by Mana & Clough (1981). The variation of measured ground settlement with distance is located in zone A and B of guide chart proposed by Peck (1969). The prediction of maximum wall deflection based on simplified method proposed by Wong & Broms (1989) agrees well with the field measurement at the final stage of excavation sequences.
