ABSTRACT

In this paper, inspection methods for pile foundation damage which was caused by the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake are described, together with their typical results, focusing on foundations of the Hanshin Expressway structures. Also, residual lateral displacement of the foundations after the Earthquake are described, which were measured by satellite-based global positioning system(GPS).

As the results, it is concluded that all the piles located at inland area were confirmed to be sound, although they had some flexural cracks, while some piles located near waterfront of reclaimed lands suffered cracks widely distributed along pile axis and were significantly affected by liquefaction and lateral flow of ground.
