ABSTRACT

The Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake caused extensive damage to the Yodogawa dike for 5,660 m long at 16 sections. Longitudinal fissures, settlement of crest and collapse of facing of dikes took place. The most severely damaged section about 2 km long were found at the left-bank near its estuary. The main cause of this section was the liquefaction of the foundation ground beneath the dike. The soil condition of the foundation ground and the failure process of dikes were studied.
