ABSTRACT

Proteins produced in milk through transgenic technology could be put to a number of uses, e.g., for therapeutics, foodstuffs or for research purposes. This chapter focuses on production and purification of recombinant proteins for therapeutic use, in particular those administered to humans by injection. How to obtain high standards of animal husbandary and milk collection have to be considered as well as how to obtain the product purity desired and assure it is safe and free to pathogens. Sheep milk is very similar to cows milk. It is high in minerals of which calcium is the most abundant at about 2g/l. Sheep like all animals, are susceptible to a number of diseases. Animals such as sheep, pigs or cows cannot be kept completely pathogen free so the highest standards of animal husbandry are essential in limiting the extent of the problem.
