ABSTRACT

To prevent the migration of waste from the sanitary landfills to the surroundings, a suitable barrier should be used. One of the most suitable barrier materials is the compacted sand-clay mixture of low permeability. In the present study, the efficiency of such barrier layer material (compacted sand-clay mixture) to isolate the sanitary landfills have been investigated through evaluating the impact of two inorganic anions on the hydraulic conductivity of a compacted sand-clay mixture. The two inorganic anions used in this study are ammonium chloride and ammonium sulphate. Solutions at different concentrations were prepared using each anion and then applied as permeant fluids to sand-clay mixture samples. The concentration of S04–solutions ranged from 137 ppm to 137 × 103 ppm, while the concentration of Cl-solutions ranged from 75 ppm to 75 × 103 ppm.
