ABSTRACT

This paper presents results of a constant-volume-swelling test (CVST) in which an unsaturated soil sample, confined to a fixed volume, was saturated. Components of the mobilised swelling pressure were measured in both the vertical and horizontal directions. A split-ring oedometer, designed to measure horizontal stress, was modified to accommodate swelling tests. These results, probably the first of a kind, are claimed to be fundamental in that they are a result of suction reduction only, without the interference of applied loads.
