ABSTRACT

Previous correlations between soil index data and expansiveness have failed to apply basic principles of soil mechanics. This study applies to unsaturated soils relevant principles of soil modelling that have been in use in saturated soil mechanics for many years. The experimental method and the analysis that followed have produced an improved correlation between index test data and the measured expansion of the soils tested. This correlation is for use in assessing the expansiveness of soils and not for estimating the likely swell under field conditions.
