ABSTRACT
It was shown by the author in 1961 that stresses in clays with osmotic pressures can be described by an effective stress equation for partly saturated sands. This paper amplifies the connection between osmotic pressures and this equation. A method is also provided for predicting the soil-suction curve from a grain size analysis of the soil.
