ABSTRACT

A unique soil improvement foundation solution was successfully used to support heavily loaded on-grade unreinforced concrete surface beds for a large warehouse complex in the Mer Rouge area of Port Louis Harbour, Mauritius. The choice of material parameters, the design, and the construction of the on-grade solutions as well as the settlement performance of a full scale loaded test slab are described. The predicted versus measured slab settlement performance is compared and the key parameters and construction techniques are discussed. These include soil parameters, load distribution, rock column spacing and soil raft geometry.
