ABSTRACT

A sophisticated three-dimensional finite element model simulating the experimental specimens of bolted semi-rigid beam-column connection using angle sections (Part I, Kasai et al. 2000) is presented, and it is followed by 9 hypothetical models for parameter study. The connection stiffness, strength, and ductility as well as plastic mechanism of the top angle are discussed based on these models. Three yield zones are identified for the top angle, and the extent of yielding in each zone appears to be affected by the varied parameters. The parameters studied include: vertical leg length of angle, locations of column bolt and beam bolt, distance of beam to column, thickness and width of angle, strain hardening as well as column bolt pretension.
