ABSTRACT

This paper presents a method to design moment resisting steel frames, so as to fail in global mode, which takes into account also geometrical second order effect. After having defined the beam cross-sections, dimensioned to resist only to vertical loads or also to some horizontal actions, the cross-sections of columns are the unknowns of the problem. The procedure proposed in this paper is an improvement of that described in previous papers, because it allows to define the strength of the columns by means of a direct approach also when the geometrical second order influence is considered, avoiding the necessity of an iterative procedure. A worked example is finally presented in order to show the practical application of the proposed method.
