ABSTRACT

A decentralized active controller that reduces the magnitude of the deflections of a segment of the deck of a cable-stayed bridge caused by seismic ground motion is presented in this paper. The bridge segment considered here is modelled by a flexible beam that is simply supported at its two ends and has a non-supporting rigid tower that holds the stay cables. The seismic excitation is tranmitted to the bridge structure through the end supports. The model used here also takes into account the non-linearity introduced by the geometry of the stay cables. The salient features of the proposed active controller are that it does not need to know the statistical description of such seismic forces and that it uses local information only.
