ABSTRACT

Structures on piles are extensively used in hydrotechnical engineering. Among the earliest systems using piles in Europe were installations on canals and in ports of Germany, France, and the Netherlands. Within Russian territory, pile foundations were initially widely used for construction of water transport systems to join the rivers of the Baltic basin and southern seas as well as in the ports on the Baltic and northern seas. With improvements in pile driving equipment, the volume and range of application of piles in hydrotechnology rose. At present, examples of the effective use of piles can be found in almost all types of hydrotechnical installations.
