ABSTRACT

This study concerns the shear behavior of beams with shear reinforcement using the ultra light weight aggregate, comparing with that of beams using normal weight aggregate. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) The ultimate shear strength of an ultra light weight concrete beam with shear reinforcement is calculated as the sum of the concrete component and the shear reinforcement component based on the modified truss theory, using 0.57 as the reduction factor of the concrete component. (2) The proposed nonlinear FEM, that modelizes the longitudinal and transverse reinforcements as embedded rebar elements, can very adequately simulate the structural behavior such as the development of cracks, the strain of rebar/concrete and deformation under the load and the ultimate strength, irrespective of the kinds of concrete.
