ABSTRACT

The planning and design for the new North/South metro line in Amsterdam is a technical challenge because of the extremely difficult conditions comprising the historical environment, piled foundations and the soft subsoil. Advanced numerical modeling is required to set new standards in the understanding of soil-structure interaction regarding building response as well as TBM- and lining design and (compensation) grouting techniques. Several innovations are developed based on the principle of Value Engineering. This paper will give an overview of the key position of FE modeling in the design.
