ABSTRACT

In Belgium the perennial strawberry plant is grown mainly as an annual.

– Planting for fruit production is carried out in early August using fresh transplants, or in June or July using cold-store transplants, and harvesting takes place in June or July of the following year.

A number of special cultivation methods are also practised: early planting under glass or late planting outdoors, in which case the transplants are put outside in holding nurseries in early August, removed in winter during the dormancy period and kept in cold storage for a while. They are replanted under glass in December or January for early crops, or outside from May to July for late crops.

– The propagation beds receive fresh transplants in September or cold-stored transplants in March.

In addition to a good knowledge of the flora to be killed, such diverse strawberry cultivation methods call for adaptation of weed control practices and a good understanding of how the herbicides work, their residual activity and their toxic effects on the subsequent crop.
