ABSTRACT

Biological crop-growing cannot respond to the technical and economic needs which guide the producers of table or wine grapes. The only method of progress resides in the intelligent employment of integrated control principles.

Researchers have been perfecting simple and reliable methods for about ten years, in a specialized IOBC working group. The measure of the real risk of damage, on the scale of the small plot or the crop–growing unit, limits the number of treatments.

A rational guide for health protection is proposed and the notion of threshold is defined precisely. Indications are provided for the different means of intervention.

The progressive change of attitude of producers may be seen by the demonstrations which have been carried out on the real scale in the research centres throughout Europe. These Centres, which are united in a network, must be able to act as support to training activities, which are essential.

The material and moral support of national and international institutions is considered to be indispensable.
