ABSTRACT

A classification of wild African bovid species utilizing montane habitats in Africa is proposed where species can be subdivided into four groups – I, species confined to montane life; II, species adapted to montane habitats; III, species able to thrive on montane habitats, but most commonly found elsewhere; and IV, species making marginal use of the montane zone. Behaviour of buffalo on Mount Kenya is discussed with respect to its importance in Quaternary research.
