ABSTRACT

In the aftermath of any type of disaster, volunteers can be a significant resource for responding to any type of disaster. One of the most challenging assignments for volunteers is the limited time to rescue and recover. Successful volunteer management is needed to assign limited volunteers tasks according to their skills. To manage this problem, optimization modeling is an effective method. The content of this chapter will cover the volunteer assignment optimization problem. Then, key definitions and variables already existing in the models will be identified. A literature review of the published volunteer assignment optimization models between 2004 and now was done using Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar to extract critical information (constraints, objective functions, and special variables). By creating a pivot table, an analysis of the models for comparison and discussion of each one in terms of their ultimate goals is provided. Finally, limitations and some recommendations for future studies will be discussed.
