ABSTRACT

There is a lack of consistent guidance on how to map fatigue in ways that are amenable to organisational safety management. This chapter describes how established measures can be used to build the so-called “fatigue profiles” allowing people operating different forms of vehicles and vessels in the road, rail, and sea transport sectors to be compared on the occurrence, causes, and effects of fatigue. This approach informs transport safety managers about fatigue-related challenges in their sector, and describes how they themselves can develop and understand the occurrence, causes, and effects of fatigue in people they employ. A summary of fatigue causes and effects is provided for people working in land- and sea-based transport sectors.
