ABSTRACT

We are Tram Operations Limited, operator of the Tramlink service in South London and Croydon on behalf of Transport for London. In 2017 we embarked upon a journey to improve our health and welfare arrangements for staff. This case study chapter is based on our experience and the benefits that we have seen.

Working with fatigue experts Clockwork Research Ltd on the critical area of fatigue management has given us a new approach in this area. The work we carried out has resulted in an in-depth understanding of fatigue, its causes, and how it can be better controlled and managed across the business. The insights gained have been applied to update our driver rosters using the Fatigue Risk Index from Health and Safety Executive (HSE) England and the SAFTE-FAST tool. This is a first for the UK transport industry.

Staff were consulted and engaged throughout the process, resulting in a set of arrangements that were fully supported at all levels of the organisation.

Positive outcomes have included changed behaviour and identification of previously unknown staff health problems. We have received several heavy and light rail industry awards for our fatigue and wellness programme as a consequence of these efforts.
