ABSTRACT

The growth and development of Information and Communication Technologies have changed the sceneries of various sectors including Healthcare and it is also modernized with innovative technologies. For the same, there should be a mechanism or technology that is essential to trim down the strain on the healthcare sector, and at the same time, a superior medical service should also be provided to the patients who are at risk. Result healthcare sector needs cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain Technology, Machine Learning, and Big Data Analytics to lessen the strain on the health sector. IoT is a technology that is widely accepted as a prospective technology to restructure the processes involved in the health sector. IoT is a system that is interconnected with various physical gadgets to collect and transform data. Thereby it streamlines the process involved in the healthcare system and facilitates healthcare service providers to carry out their jobs swiftly, timely, and accurately. Companies that are manufacturing health-related technologies heavily depend upon IoT technology and invest more in this technology. As a result, in recent times, it could be seen that almost all sorts of electronic gadgets are coming with different types of connectivity, like smart wearables namely smartwatches, smart bands, smart headphones, smart clothing, smart glass, smart rings, activity tracker, and medical wearables. All these gadgets are enabled with IoT technology to collect and supply health-related data to medical practitioners to complete their tasks on time with high accuracy. IoT-enabled technologies are facilitating the healthcare system to carry out the routine tasks to get better results in the case of patients’ recovery state; meantime, it also lessens the work pressure of the doctors, nurses, and healthcare service providers. Moreover, this technology also helps to monitor the patients remotely, observe the level and progress of the treatment, reminds the patients to take medicines on time with the right dosage, blood sugar and pressure, oxygen levels, and weight, by this way it saves lives in event of various health-related emergencies like heart attack, diabetes, asthma problem, etc. Thus, the IoT and its enabling technologies are offering incomparable benefits to the health sector, and thus it enhances the efficiency and quality of treatments, as a consequence, it promotes patients’ health and leads to a disease-free society. With this backdrop, the present chapter attempted to explain how IoT technology transforms the modern health system.
