ABSTRACT

The aim of this research is to provide insight about the environmental burdens of a conventional Ro-Ro type ferry currently in use for policy makers, ship owners and the public. Since Turkey is currently in the transition phase of implementing the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations (following MARPOL Annex VI Rule 14: 0.5 % of sulfur content), the findings of this paper will aid in providing new information for establishing future decision-making processes. The life cycle assessment (LCA) approach is used to determine the long-term effects of the case ship focusing on the operation phase. Since the implementing new technologies to reduce the environmental burdens and increase the fuel efficiency of the Ro-Ro type ships will be important in the directorial processes for the shipping industry due to upcoming policies of Turkish Government, the findings of this research were also compared to a hybrid ship which is operating in Scotland.
