ABSTRACT

This work proposes a methodology for the design of prosthetic parts with improved mechanical behaviour, by functional gradients of the gyroid shape with the objective of mimicking bone properties through gyroid scaffold. The gyroid infill was first characterized to obtain a homogenous constitutive model which correlates the elasticity modulus and ultimate stress with the apparent density. The bio-inspired remodelling algorithm (BIRA) was tested with two numerical methods, the FEM and a meshless method. The density distribution obtained proved to be coherent with the density distribution of bone tissue. Then, based on the obtained density distribution, prototypes and experimentally tested. The obtained results can be extrapolated to other materials for inexpensive prototyping.
