ABSTRACT

Animal research plays an important role in the one welfare agenda through shaping the health of human and animal populations, as well as protecting the environment by means such as ensuring the safety of chemicals. Veterinarians, working alongside scientists, medical clinicians, regulators and others, are valued collaborative partners in this agenda. This chapter discusses the various activities that make up the role of the laboratory animal veterinarian based on their relevance to One Welfare. Matters of conflict and limitations of the approach in this sphere will be addressed. Suggestions for areas where veterinarians may improve their engagement and influence are proposed.
