ABSTRACT

The internet of things (IoT) is at the groundbreaking edge of innovation, rapidly shaping our technological future at an astounding rate and making information freely accessible in real time at inconceivable speeds. Knowledge is power, and IoT forms an architecture in which knowledge is mined and extracted from the data collected by communicating devices, with minimal human intervention.

Although IoT can enable massive innovations in a varied number of domains, bringing about great economic benefits, one must not forget the challenges and imminent threats caused by its adoption at scale. If not resolved properly, a compromised IoT infrastructure can inflict damage in the form of data breaches. A vulnerable IoT node can compromise the complete network, exposing potentially critical data and access points. One aspect hindering its adoption is the fact that IoT end nodes are often small devices, making them especially vulnerable to attacks, as security mechanisms have limited access to both memory and computations. Cyber security approaches are needed to preserve the security of the data of such IoT devices over the internet.
