ABSTRACT

Many research demonstrate that internet-based communication technology has always positive, appreciable relationship to democracy commitment. Online participation in the contexts of democracy goes in line with offline one. This happens only if the participation based on genuine communication. This article aims to explore the practice of orchestration of opinion as a form of ingenuity of communication in the context of presidential election of Indonesia in 2019. We collected data by observing trending topics on Twitter during the 2019-presidential election campaign (23 September 2018 – 13 April 2019). This result shows genuine communication in the context of political contestation for Indonesian president disappear because of opinion orchestration. We find the practices of orchestration: production same message from many Twitter's account; irrelevance between messages and hashtags, participation in Twitter only to raise the hashtags so as to be in trending topic position; the same rate between retweets and mentions. Our study focuses on practice of hashtags usage during campaign. It does not analyze actor taking a role in opinion orchestration. This study confines the scope of research to a certain context, politic. Hence, this study can no transferable to other contexts. Further research should conduct delimitation of this study.
